Understanding SAQ in Sports Performance Training
SAQ is a term used to describe athletes who are considered “fast.” “Fast” is in quotes because it’s a vague term that describes movement. The SAQ words (speed, agility, and quickness) have different meanings and are used to describe specific movements. It is important to understand the differences between these terms. The National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) defines speed as “the ability to move your body as quickly as possible in the direction you want to go.” While speed is important in sports performance training, there are many situations where other movement attributes can be even more critical.
Defining Speed, Agility, and Quickness
NASM defines agility as the ability to change direction, speed up, or slow down while maintaining proper posture. Agility is not the same as speed. Athletes who are agile can change direction, accelerate, or slow down while keeping body positions that enhance athletic movement. Quickness is defined by NASM as “the ability to react quickly and change position in all planes and body positions with maximum force production during functional activities.”
Children today spend much of their time sitting in front of TVs or playing video games. This negatively impacts their posture, often limiting their athletic performance. Posture is defined by the “position and bearing” of the body to align and function the kinetic chains.

Posture’s Role in Sports Performance Training
We can help youth athletes maximize their speed and power by addressing postural deficiencies. All good athletes should have a strong understanding of SAQ, posture training, and other attributes. Which attribute is most important will depend on the demands of each sport. However, all three are related. Athletes who are agile and quick, based on the definitions above, are likely fast because they can produce force with good posture and athletic positioning. As part of their sports performance training, youth athletes should focus on improving their SAQ through posture and movement techniques. Teaching young athletes how to enhance their SAQ while maintaining proper posture is crucial to their development.
Building a Strong Foundation in Sports Performance Training
The foundation of a youth athlete’s training program should be learning how to move in any direction while maintaining good posture. This focus on posture and movement will ensure that they develop the necessary skills for success in sports performance training, helping them improve in speed, agility, and quickness.
